Dentures
Complete dentures in Calvert City, KY, replace all your natural teeth, while partial dentures replace one or more of your missing teeth. If you opt for partial dentures, the missing teeth need not be next to each other.
Dentures are a long-standing and popular tooth replacement option for people who have lost natural teeth to disease, trauma, or extraction. Dr. Barry Wilson and Dr. Pool of Hi-Tech Gentle Family Dentistry is prepared to fit you with the most appropriate set of dentures for your situation.
How Do Full and Partial Dentures Work?
The base of full dentures is flesh-colored, and it fits in the roof of your mouth. The natural suctioning power of the roof of your mouth keeps the appliance in place. The bottom row of dentures remains in place with dental adhesive or implant screws.
Partial dentures have a clip Dr. Wilson and Dr. Pool attaches to the back of the remaining teeth. This option differs from dental bridges that require healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth to support the bracket and wires. Whether you need all your teeth replaced or only some teeth replaced, obtaining dentures typically requires multiple visits to our dental practice.
What Are the Different Types of Dentures?
Full traditional dentures consist of hard plastic made to match the color of gums with replacement teeth attached to them. Partial traditional dentures have the appropriate amount of replacement teeth attached to hard plastic with a hook on each side to keep them in place. Both types are fully removable; you should soak them overnight in a glass of water with a denture cleansing tab.
Implant retained dentures
These dentures attach to dental implants in your jaw, eliminating the need to use dental adhesive. The bottom of each denture fits securely into an implant screw to keep them firmly in your mouth. You can remove implant-retained dentures if necessary.
Implant-supported dentures
Supported dentures differ from retained dentures in that they remain permanently affixed in your mouth. Dr. Wilson and Dr. Pool places four or more implant screws to support full dentures. Of the three types of dentures, patients tend to prefer implant-supported dentures because their look and function is closest to that of natural teeth.
Specialty Dentures
Also known as palateless dentures, the dentures worn on your top jaw do not have a plastic base that fits in the roof of your mouth. Palateless dentures may be a good choice if you have a strong gag reflex or just don’t think you could adjust to having the base of traditional dentures cover the roof of your mouth all day.
Dentures made from functional impressions
These dentures are softer and fit more securely in your mouth. To fabricate them, we take a customized impression of your gums. We then add flowing impression material to the dentures. As you wear the dentures and chew, speak, yawn, or engage in other everyday functions, your mouth’s soft tissues and muscles mold the dentures until they fit you perfectly.
The above are just two examples of specialty dentures. Dr. Wilson and Dr. Pool would be happy to discuss all types of dentures in Calvert City, KY, during your initial consultation.
